Surprise! It’s the 20th again & that means it’s time for the Surprise Recipe Swap. This month I had:

Dawn fromSpatulas On Parade!

Dawn has some awesome desserts on her blog, but I decided to go savory this month with thesePhilly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes. I don’t have sloppy joes very often, mostly because my kids aren’t huge ground beef fans, but there is just something about the name, “Philly Cheesesteak” that makes my mouth water. This is a super easy dinner, very flavorful, & very sloppy; hence the name, right? Oh, & the leftovers are fabulous, if you have any leftover. We enjoyed this dinner & I hope you will too!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 green pepper, chopped
  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup A-1 steak sauce
  • 2 tsp peppercorn/Montreal steak seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • Sliced Provolone or Mozzarella
  • Hamburger Buns

Instructions

  1. Brown beef in a large skillet. Drain fat & set aside. In the same pan heat olive oil & sauté onion & pepper for 4 minutes until starting to soften. Return beef to the pan with the vegetables.
  2. Whisk cornstarch into beef broth & add the steak sauce & beef broth/cornstarch mixture to the meat. Add steak seasoning, salt & pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid is absorbed.
  3. Toast hamburger buns (if desired) & top with meat mixture & a slice of cheese. (I placed my slice of cheese in the warm pan with the meat, waited until it melted & scooped up the cheesy meat mixture onto my bun.)

So amazing!! Only thing I do different is I use a onion and some garlic when frying up the meat. My boyfriends fav!!!!!

Is there anything I could substitute in place of the Montreal Steak Seasoning? I don’t have any and won’t be going to the store today

    • Amber Reply

Gosh! I’m so sorry for the delayed reply! Salt, pepper, and minced garlic are my go-to for seasoning meat. If you have any onion (dried or fresh) that’s always good too!

Do you think I could make this work as a crockpot meal?

    • Amber Reply

You would still want to brown the meat and drain the fat. Then throw everything in the slow cooker for a couple hours on low to cook the veggies.

Hi, these sound delicious and I’m going to make them tonight! I noticed the nutrition calculator and it says it yields 6 portions and around 300ish per portion. Do you know if that’s the meat mixture only or with bun? Thank you!

    • Amber Reply

I’m not sure where you are seeing a nutrition calculator, but I’m assuming that’s meat, cheese, and bun. I would just put it in MyFitnessPal and compute it with the ingredients that you use.

Right under the picture at the top of the page there’s a link “magic get nutrition info” but great idea about myfitnesspal, thank you!

I Mixed the left overs with cooked pasta, and the family loved it. I got two nights dinner out of it😜

That’s great Bridget! Glad you liked it! Love the pasta idea too!

These look delish; however, if you ever go to Philly for a cheesesteak, there are no peppers in them. This is a very common thing people do. I will try these, minus the peppers. 🙂

Must be a western states interpretation of them. Haha. I’ve never been there, so thanks for letting me know!

I made this last night and it was amazing! I used 1 pound ground venison but other than that i followed the recipe exactly and it was delicious, even my boyfriend loved it and he’s not a fan of regular sloppy joes! When i added the steak sauce i though the flavor was going to overwhelm the dish but it did not, everything blended perfectly! I think next time i’m going to try it with sub buns instead of hamburger buns just to keep everything on the bun a little better! Thanks!

Awesome! Thanks for coming back to share your experience!
