U.S. Open Round 1 results: Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele make history on day of low scores in LA | Sporting News (2024)

As far as golf majors go, the U.S. Open isn’t supposed to be easy.

But that’s exactly how it played for the pros Thursday. The only thing that was missing was the free game opportunity at the end of the miniature golf course — and maybe a windmill or two.

Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele made historyby each posting a round of 62 — the lowest round at a U.S. Open and tied for the lowest major round of all time.

Fans were treated to multiple aces at the 15th hole, from Matthieu Pavon and Sam Burns. Then there was the emergence of Dustin Johnson, who put on a dominant display late in the day to make sure LIV Golf remained at the top of everyone’s mind.

Plenty of eyes were trained on Rory McIlroy in the wake of the merger that rocked the golf world — and he delivered, outside of a whiff on 18 to finish the day. McIlroy will take his 5-under score into Friday.

The rounds put together by Fowler and Schauffele will remain a talking point at Los Angeles Country Club, especially with the venue hosting a major for the first time.

It will be worth monitoring how the U.S. Golf Association responds to the early low scores. Great golf is great for the fans, but it’s hard to imagine that the USGA is pleased with this opening round.

9:59 p.m. —Disaster for McIlroy! He whiffs on a shot from the greenside rough and is facing a possible double bogey to finish the day. After a great start, this would be a brutal finish.

9:46 p.m. —Johnson can't save the horrific shot at the ninth to reach 8 under, but he will try to remain at 7 under with a miracle putt for par.

9:39 p.m. —Bennett will take a 3-under to the clubhouse after finishing with another bogey.

9:31 p.m. —Johnson will get a crack at tying Fowler and Schauffele thanks to a birdie at the eighth. Everything is working for him right now.

9:16 p.m. —Wyndham Clark puts a bow on his great day at LACC. One more birdie does the trick and he'll start the second round at 6 under.

9:10 p.m. —Mickelson finished off his opening round with a 1-under performance. The NBC broadcast has noted that he's been heckled a lot today, given all the drama surrounding LIV. It'll be interesting to see how that develops as the weekend unfolds.

9:07 p.m. —McIlroy has been fairly quiet since his hot start, but has hit all 15 greens in regulation today and puts himself in a great spot for another birdie on 15.

9:05 p.m. —Bennett drops it in and the newly turned pro is off to quite the start.

— U.S. Open (USGA) (@usopengolf) June 16, 2023

8:49 p.m. —Sam Bennett hasn't been in the discussion for most of the day, but he's quietly marching up the leaderboard. A birdie at 15 gets him to 4 under and well into contention.

8:43 p.m. —Sahith Theegala waves the magic club and escapes with a great par save to remain at 2-over. His experience at LACC was on display there.

8:41 p.m. —Wyndham Clark hasn't made the cut so far in his U.S. Open career, but another birdie had him at 6-under and well on his way to recording a personal best finish at the tournament.

8:39 p.m. —Dustin Johnson is hanging around. He wasn't mentioned a lot to this point, but he's now 5-under through 14 holes and moved into a tie for third.

8:12 p.m. —Dustin Johnson finds his way into the top five now with a birdie to move to 4-under through 12 holes.

8:09 p.m. —Hideki Matsuyama is having a day to forget, seemingly struggling at every turn. He's 2-over and it makes matter worse since he's playing with McIlroy — who might be on pace to post the top score today.

8:07 p.m. —Dustin Johnson is making a charge now, lurking in the background at 3-under with a chance for birdie.

8:04 p.m. —Mickelson recovers from a difficult spot on the 5th and saves par to remain 3-under.

7:52 p.m. —Wyndham Clark's run is hitting a speed bump thanks to some trouble on the 13th. He will have to settle for a bogey at least now.

7:46 p.m. —WHAT A SHOT! Mickelson drills another birdie, this time on the 4th from long range. That ball traveled what seemed to be a country mile across the green before dropping into the hole.

7:33 p.m. —Remember Wyndham Clark? Hopefully you didn't because he's back with another birdie to move to 5-under through 12 holes. He joins McIlroy and Harman as they try to chase down the leaders, Fowler and Schauffele.

7:31 p.m. —Koepka is finding his stroke here with back-to-back birdies. It was a difficult opening nine for him, but gets himself back to 1-over.

7:24 p.m. —According the broadcast, Jordan Spieth is a Bermuda grass specialist. He had a short putt on both occasions and missed them both. Announcer jinx is in full effect at the U.S. Open.

7:20 p.m. —Harman wraps up the front stretch and posts a 5-under. Can McIlroy surpass him with his try at the 9th?

7:17 p.m. —The birdies are flying today. If you tuned in to watch professional golfers struggling, then this is not your tournament so far. Every par feels like a disappointment to the viewing audience.

7:14 p.m. —McIlroy joins Harman at 5-under. He's cooking to get this one started and taking care of business through the first eight holes.

7:11 p.m. —Harman is at it again! He wraps up the front nine with yet another birdie putting the lefty at 5-under now.

7:03 p.m. —Sam Bennett is making sure that people don't forget his name. A big tee shot on the 9th gives him a great look for birdie as he tries to move 3-under.

7:01 p.m. —Harman is in rhythm right now. A great tee shot at the 8th gives him an eagle chance at the par-five.

6:54 p.m. —McIlroy gets his birdie at the 7th. He is also 4-under and making an early charge for the 8-under at the top of the leaderboard.

6:52 p.m. —Koepka finds trouble, but does a masterful job of escaping harm after his tee shot ended up in the thick Bermuda grass. His second shot lands within feet of the hole and Koepka manages to save par. Crisis averted.

6:49 p.m. —Clark and Harman might have company too as McIlroy puts an impressive tee shot close to the hole. He has a chance to go 4-under through the first seven as well.

6:46 p.m. —Brooks Koepka continues a tough start with another bogey, this time at the 6th. Unlike the others, he's 3-over so far.

6:44 p.m.Wyndham Clark with quite the save at the 8th — putting himself at 4-under and breaks loose for sole possession of third at the moment.

6:41 p.m. —All that hard work from McIlroy ends with a disappointing par after he worked himself back to a birdie chance.

6:37 p.m. —Sam Burns is, well — on fire right now. It wasn't long ago that he aced the 15th and now he passes another test with a birdie on the 16th. Burns joins a long list of golfers that are 3-under.

6:36 p.m. —Trouble for McIlroy? Not for long! He sets up a birdie opportunity after it appeared the barranca would wreak havoc.

6:31 p.m. —Mickelson is really feeling it today. His second on 18 comes with a side of the club twirl, giving him a good chance at birdie to round out the back nine.

6:30 p.m. —Harris English's bid for four birdies in a row goes just wide. Par at the 9th keeps him at 2-under.

6:28 p.m. —Jordan Spieth is struggling to start the day, settling for par after a lost opportunity on 15.

6:28 p.m. —Trouble at the 6th for McIlroy, who ends up in the barranca after a wayward tee shot.

6:27 p.m. —Brian Harman will also be tossing his name into contention, with his third birdie in six holes. Right now it's a logjam of eight golfers at 3-under. Laying up turned out to be a good play for him at the 6th.

6:18 p.m. —Plenty of eyes were going to be on Rory McIlroy to open the weekend in L.A. He's responded by putting on a show to this point, with three birdies in his first five holes. McIlroy is 3-under and looking to put up a good number after a wild week in the golf world.

5:55 p.m. —Koepka escapes the bunker at the 4th hole, setting up a short attempt to save par.

5:50 p.m. —The South African Thriston Lawrence gets back to even with a nicely played birdie from the rough at the 8th hole.

5:05 p.m. — Just like that, the lead is back to five for Fowler and Schauffele. Barjon finishes his day with a bogey, just as Scheffler did.

4:59 p.m. — There's a serious gap between the two leaders and the rest of the field, but a surprise name just cut into it: Paul Barjon. The French-born golfer is 4-under through 17 holes.

4:42 p.m. — You can't ask for much better of a start than Wyndham Clark, who eagles the first hole. 2-under after one hole? Impressive.

4:39 p.m. — Schauffle does make history along with Fowler, finishing with a 62. He's hoping to enter Friday with a share of the lead alongside Fowler, and it'll take a record-breaking performance for that not to be reality.

4:26 p.m. — Disappointing end to an otherwise strong day for Scottie Scheffler, who bogeys the 18th hole and drops five strokes back of the lead. That was his first bogey since the opening hole.

4:25 p.m. — Make room, Rickie. Xander Schauffele with a birdie to join in on Fowler's history-making day by moving one hole away from a 62. Schauffele and Fowler sit atop the leaderboard at 8-under, and it'll be tough for anyone to catch them today.

3:59 p.m. — Rickie Fowler now has TEN birdies today. That's never happened in a U.S. Open round, according to the USGA.

3:43 p.m. — Scottie Scheffler continues to be one of the most consistent players on the course. He's not letting Fowler pull too far ahead.
