How do you pass a pet adoption interview? ›

Ask a Lot of Questions

The rescue wants to know that you're committed to providing a forever home. Put together a list of questions you have about the animal. You'll want to ask about any behavioral or health issues that will need to be addressed and be prepared to explain how you'll handle them.

It's important to be honest. They're not looking for anything too deep or personal. They just want to make sure you're not adopting for the wrong reasons.

Poodles, Labrador retrievers, Bernese Mountain Dogs, and Yorkshire terriers are just a few of the breeds that are well-suited to be first-time pets. There's also a lot to learn in terms of housebreaking, setting up feeding routines, grooming, and general canine healthcare.

(Many people come to a specific rescue as a referral from someone who is known by the rescue.) That being said, if it is not a person known to the rescue, they might ask for a non-family member, but usually a family member knows you best, so can provide a great reference.

Check with the animal shelter, rescue or breeder where you got your pet. Some organizations require in the adoption contract that you return the pet to them if you can no longer provide care. Even if it wasn't part of your contract, the organization or breeder may be able to help you find your pet a new home.

You might be bringing a dog home from a shelter, and their current name doesn't feel right for their personality. No problem, you can change that name. Dogs of any age can learn new names. The puppy was probably only just getting used to it anyway, and shelters often rename dogs that they bring in.

History. Betsy Banks Saul and Jared Saul came up with the idea of Petfinder.org in early 1996, when Betsy was working for New Jersey's urban forestry program while completing her Master's thesis at Clemson University. In 2005, Petfinder launched a large database of pets rescued from the effects of Hurricane Katrina.

Another option is to approach a local rescue or breed rescue about doing a "courtesy post" on their site. Many are happy to list animals, even if they don't have foster space to take them in physically. Some groups will even help you screen prospective homes.

Add photos and a video when you create a pet listing. You can come back and edit at any time after a listing is created. While photos are not required to post a pet, they certainly help get pets adopted quicker! Post up to 6 photos for each pet (or 5 photos and 1 video).

A government-issued identification (driver's license, state ID, passport) with your name and photo is required to adopt a pet. LA Animal Services Centers accept payment by cash, check, or credit card (name on credit card must match the name on the photo identification).

Pet interview questions to ask

How old is your pet and how long have you had him or her? Can you provide documentation from your vet that he or she is up to date on required vaccinations? Has he or she been spayed or neutered? Is he or she house-trained?

Include how you know the person you are writing the reference letter for and how long you have known them. If you have witnessed the individual or couple's involvement with children, either your children or others, tell how they interact and what qualities they have that would make them good parents.

Let the potential adopter speak and then probe for more information – who, what, when, where, why (proper order) questions are best. Avoid asking only yes/no questions—ask probing questions and have the adopter tell their story: Ask about what cats they have owned over the years and what happened to them, etc.
